Can You, Mommy?
by Kathryn Taylor
My eyes which master piercing glares,
Seeking to spy what will ensnare
My life to darkness and despair,
Looking for what I deem unfair-
But sometimes I wonder when you look at me,
Can you see beyond that, Mommy?
My ears which never hear the rules,
Listening to words of twisted fools,
Making me seem a stubborn mule,
Whose only desire is to be too cruel-
But sometimes I wonder when you listen to me,
Can you hear beyond that, Mommy?
My lips which utter hateful things
Speaking lies and blaspheming-
I'm the very best at arguing
And havoc to your world I bring-
But sometimes I wonder when you talk to me,
Can you encourage beyond that, Mommy?
My hands which hit and try to hurt,
Having perfect timing, a real expert,
Everyone's touch I always pervert,
Trying to force you to desert-
But, sometimes I wonder when you reach for me,
Can you be gentle always, Mommy?
My heart is ever so hard as stone,
Hoping one day you will disown,
Forcing myself to go it alone,
Rejecting that which I've never known-
But, sometimes I wonder when you care about me,
Can you love me beyond that, Mommy?
Will you, Mommy?
