I Remember
by Susan Jerkatis
I remember, Momma
You laughing on the couch
With that man
Booze and cigarettes
The blue light of the television
Getting your attention
I cried, Momma
Reaching out my arms to you
When you put the pacifier in my mouth
Leaving me dirty and hungry
Alone, sad, angry
Needing your attention
I fight, Momma
With this new lady
Who loves me and holds me
Tucks me in and paints my toes
Kisses and tickles and hugs
Paying me attention
I resist, Momma
Kicking, biting, screaming
Pulling her hair, slapping, breaking
Everything precious to her
Including me
Getting some attention because I remember Momma.
