The Little Prince
Surviving Life with Reactive Attachment Disorder

Letter to Teacher about Movies - Template Letter

March 14, 2005

Dear Teacher

_____ came home upset today after viewing the PG movie “October Sky.” Because of _____’s mental illness, Reactive Attachment Disorder, and his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, _____ can not critically evaluate movies like normal, mentally healthy children. Movies with death, shooting, fire, cursing, drugs and alcohol, stealing, sexual topics, and child abuse trigger _____’s anxiety, fear, and PTSD, and we see acting out behavior at home as a result.  We very carefully monitor what _____ watches on TV and in the movies, as these themes are much more real to a child from an abusive background.

In the future, when movies are being shown, please excuse _____ to either the library or to another classroom for the duration. _____ very clearly understands that we do not allow him to view movies because he will become upset; he doesn’t yet have the judgement to ask to be excused.

If you have any further questions, we urge you to contact _____’s therapist, ________ , at 555-0000.

We appreciate your understanding, cooperation, and commitment to helping _____ heal.

Sincerely,
