My World

by Susan Jerkatis

In my world I am happy and free
People and pain don't affect me
I am strong and take care of myself
Stay away from me; I don't need your help.

In my world I do as I please
Don't ever expect too much of me
I wiggle into your heart and boldly storm out
I'll make you hurt with my whispers or furious with my shout

In my world you're just another someone
Who waltzes in and then is gone
Babbling words like forever and love
Nobody handles me; you think you have the touch?

In my world I'll play your suffocating game
Family, structure, routine, whatever its name
Get along and go along until I'm out of here
Better things are waiting for me once I'm clear.

In my world at the edge of night
Waiting for sleep or the beginning of light
Memories of mommy and daddy come with the dawn
And I cry, "These are nice people, but I want to go home."
