RAD Flower

                   by Jodi Sides
A flower seed is pushed into the dirt,
unwilling to accept the warmth surrounding it,
it pushes and pushes and pushes until it peeks out above the earth.
Sunlight pours out on the tiny plant that has burst forth of the seed.
The minute leaves look up toward the sun.
They want to reach out and feel the warmth but hesitate.
Gently the warmth of the sun coaxes the leaves to rise
above the dirt and bask in the glow.
Day by day that tiny plant gets a little stronger, a little bigger,
and a little more comfortable in it surroundings.
A little child runs by the weak plant.
It cowers back toward the dirt it rose from.
The sun once again shines upon the plant, bringing it back up into it's warmth.
The little plant sprouts beautiful purple petals.
The wind blows but does not hurt the purple flower.
The rain falls but does not dampen it.
The flower reaches up higher and higher to the warmth of the sun's rays.
A child walks by and slowly bends down to sniff the purple flower.
The flower opens its petals in all their glory.
