Stranger Talk

By Kathryn Taylor

"What sweet, adorable kids!
You must be ever so proud,
To be blessed with these angels,"
Says a voice from out of the crowd-
"You're quiet as a fieldmouse
and so very well behaved,
I bet that you are also
So strong and oh, so brave!
I'm sure you help your mom a lot,
And do your homework too,"
On and on the stranger goes,
Telling her lies to you-
What do you think as she rambles on,
My sweet, little, RAD darling?
Do you think she'd believe a word,
If I told her everything?
For a moment or two, I fantasize
And imagine just what I'd say,
As I reflect on the deeds you've done
To turn my dark hair grey.
"Adorable, yes," I'd say to her,
"and proud that they hide so well
their dirty, nasty underwear,
and what good lies they tell-
Angels to all, except for us,
For we only get their horns,
As they plot their little evil deeds
And unleash on us their scorn-
Yes, they're quiet and sneak around
And steal all that we've saved-
I know they're strong cause it's me they hit,
But I'm the one whose brave-
Yes, its true, they do help me
Right out of my comfort zone-
It really makes me long for the time
When they will both be grown-
Homework for them is easy enough,
But there's one thing I don't get,
How it is they get the dog
To eat so much of it."
Then I awaken from my dream,
Turn to the stranger and say,
"Thank you for the compliments,
and have a wonderful day!!"
