Chapter Twelve
Morty Mouse ran through the living room as fast as he could and quickly jumped inside the small hole underneath the couch. He was petrified, and his little heart was beating loudly as the angry dog barked and snarled just inches away from his hiding place.
"SHUT UP!!!!.....what the hell are you barking at," the baby's father growled.
Morty was so scared. He just sat there as quietly as he could, hoping that the dog would soon give up and walk away.
"I said, SHUT UP, you stupid mutt," the voice rang out again.
Morty took a deep breath before leaning forward to sneak a peek out of the hole.
"AHHHHHHHHH ...... IT'S A MONSTER!!!!!," he screeched as he quickly pulled himself back inside.
"Go away," Morty whispered through a trembling voice. "Please.... please just go away."
The dog whimpered, and frantically scratched away at the floor just below him.
"KNOCK IT OFF," the angry voice bellowed.
Morty had never been so scared in his entire life. He wanted to lean down and talk to the huge monster and tell him that he was a friendly mouse, but every time he started to move the dog barked louder and louder.
"I said...... CUT IT OUT!!!!!!!!!"
The dog let out a loud yelp as the angry man grabbed him by the collar and dragged him across the room. Morty breathed a sigh of relief when the back door slammed shut, and he could hear the muffled sounds of the dog barking outside in the backyard. He sat quietly for a very long time and listened.
"Where am I," Morty thought as he sat up and rubbed his sleepy eyes. "What's that noise?"
"Oh....... I must have fallen asleep," he whispered to himself as he jumped down from his hiding place inside the couch. He smiled when he saw the baby on the floor playing with his toy train. Morty always did love to hide under the furniture and watch as the train quickly sped around and around the track. Sometimes he even daydreamed that he was up there riding inside one of those cars himself. "Oh, what fun it would be to ride on a train."
But the baby didn't appear to be thinking about the train today. He seemed a bit preoccupied and Morty couldn't help but notice that he kept glancing over at the front door. Morty turned and looked over in the direction of the door.
"Oh No,".. Morty shrieked. "Someone forgot to shut the door!."
"Don't even think about it, Little One," he whispered to himself as he crawled in closer to the baby.
"Ewwwwwwwww," Morty said, making a face and backing away. "I don't like the way you smell today, Little One."
As Morty sat there watching the baby play, he began thinking about Mother Mouse. He wondered what she was doing right now and if she had ever found the note that he left for her on the table beside his bed.
"Little One, you desperately need a bath," he said as he crinkled up his nose. "Yuck...... I can smell you all the way over here."
The baby stood up and started toddling around the room. "Choo Choo," he said smiling.
"Yep, that's your Choo Choo," Morty said grinning back at him.
Morty began to get more and more nervous as the baby toddled closer and closer to the open door."
"Don't go out there, Little One," he said nervously. "Little One.... get away from....."
Before he could even finish his sentence, the baby shoved open the screen door and was already on his way out on the porch.
"STOP, LITTLE ONE," Morty screamed as he ran over to the door. "GET BACK IN HERE RIGHT NOW!"
Morty Mouse ran out onto the porch and watched as the baby crawled down the front steps and toddled across the grass.
"Little One......, GET BACK HERE....... YOU'RE GONNA GET HURT!!!!!!!"
Morty was frantic as he watched all of the cars speeding past the house.
"OH NO......... HE'S HEADING RIGHT FOR THE STREET," Morty screeched.
"LITTLE ONE, STOP!!!!! DON'T GO INTO THE STREET!!!!!!! STOP!!!!!!!!!!"
Morty covered his eyes as the baby stepped off of the curb. Horns were blowing everywhere, and several cars came to a screeching halt in the middle of the road.. Angry people were getting out of their cars and screaming for someone to get the baby out of the road.
"OH MY GOD," the voice rang out from behind him.
The baby's mother flew down the front steps right past Morty, and grabbed a hold of the baby by his shirt.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN THE ROAD?" she screamed as she dragged him back up onto the sidewalk.
"WHAT THE HELL'S THE MATTER WITH YOU?" a woman yelled as she got out of her car. "YOU NEED TO WATCH YOUR KID LADY!!!!!!!!!!"
The baby's mother glared at the woman and started walking back towards the house. "AND YOU NEED TO LEARN TO MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS," she yelled as she grabbed her son by his arm and pulled him up the front steps.
"I THINK IT IS MY BUSINESS WHEN YOUR KID RUNS OUT IN FRONT OF MY CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!," the lady shot back at her in a nasty tone.
"YEAH, KEEP YOUR KID OUTTA THE ROAD," an older man yelled as he shook his fist in the air.
"WHAT KIND OF A MOTHER ARE YOU........?" another women yelled as she got back in her car and started driving away.
The baby's mother turned and flashed them all a nasty look before flipping up her middle finger. Then she turned and kicked open the front door.
"GET IN THE HOUSE," she screamed as she shoved her son into the house. "WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU DOING OUTSIDE?"
The baby started screaming and backing away from his mother.
"DON'T YOU WALK AWAY FROM ME WHEN I'M TALKING TO YOU!!!!!!!!"
"GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE. RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Morty was completely terrified. He started screaming at the baby's mother to calm down, but she couldn't hear him. She just continued to get angrier and angrier...... as the frightened baby backed further and further away from her.
"GET OVER HERE.......... YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!!!!!!!"
"WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO STOP MAKING SO MUCH TROUBLE????????"
"I'LL TEACH YOU NOT TO RUN OUTSIDE IN THE STREET AGAIN," she screamed as she yanked the belt from her jeans.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO," Morty screamed. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... PLEASE DON'T HURT HIM AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE"S ONLY A BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Without even stopping to think, Morty took off running for home as fast as he could.
"MOTHER...... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"MOTHER............. WHERE ARE YOU?????????????????"
Morty was so frantic that Mother Mouse couldn't even begin to understand what he was trying to say as he came barreling through the door.
"PLEASE...... PLEASE HELP....... I CAN'T....... YOU HAVE TO...... SHE'S....... I DON'T........... I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"Morty........ Morty, what's the matter?????? What's Wrong?????? Did someone hurt you?????
"HELP...... PLEASE HELP...... YOU HAVE TO !!!!!!! .....HE NEEDS....... HE NEEDS SOMEONE TO......."
"Slow down, Morty...... slow down. I don't understand. I don't understand what you're saying!!!!!!!!!"
Morty Mouse grabbed his mother by the arm and began dragging her towards the door.
"YOU HAVE TO. ..... YOU HAVE TO COME............ COME HELP......... SHE'S......... SHE'S.......... SHE'S HURTING HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Morty literally dragged Mother Mouse out the door, and into the living room. Mother Mouse was so confused as Morty just stood there gazing back and forth across the empty room. But..... then she heard him. His near-silent sobs were coming from the far corner of the room.... behind the rocking chair.
Mother Mouse followed behind her son as he made his way across the room. She couldn't help but notice that Morty's legs almost appeared to be growing shorter and shorter with each step that he took.
Mother Mouse let out a loud gasp when she saw the battered baby crouching down in the corner... curled up tightly into a little ball. Then she watched helplessly as her son slowly melted down onto the floor and began sobbing.
"Why?????????????????????????????????????," he wailed. "Why would she do this???????????????"
"He's.......... he's just a baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Mother Mouse knelt down and gently pulled Morty up into her arms.
"He never hurt anyone, Mother..... he never did!!!!!!!! He never did anything wrong...... never did nothin to deserve this........"
"It's okay, son......," Mother Mouse cried, as she gently rocked him back and forth.
"No.......... no it's not........ it's not okay," Morty sobbed. "It's never going to be okay........... NEVER!!!!!! They're never gonna stop........ never gonna stop hurting him........"
