Chapter Thirteen

"Stop.... please stop," Morty Mouse pleaded.  "What are you doing??????"

A panicked expression came over Morty's face, as he stood there watching the baby pound his head against the side of the crib.

"Little One, why are you doing this.," Morty cried.  "You need to stop this right now!  Do you hear me???????"

Tears streamed down Morty's face as the baby continued to pound his already bruised and swollen head against the rails.

"WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU.... WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS???   STOP IT!!!!!!!!  DO YOU HEAR ME??????  I SAID, STOP IT RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!"

Morty sat down on the mattress and sobbed.  "Little One, I... I just don't understand.  Why.. why are you doing this?  Why would you want to hurt yourself??????"

"MORTY.... Morty, where are you," the voice rang out from the hallway.

Morty sighed with relief when he heard his Mother's voice calling out to him.

"Mother.... Mother I'm in here," Morty shouted.   "I'm in here with the baby.

Mother Mouse quickly squeezed herself underneath the bedroom door and stood there shaking her head sadly.  "What's going on in here, Morty," she called out.

"Mother... please come help him!!!!!"

Mother Mouse ran over to the crib and looked up at her frantic son.

"Did they hurt him, Morty," she called up to him.  "What's wrong...what did they do?"

Morty quickly slid down the back of the crib and jumped into his mother's arms.

"Please... please make him stop," he sobbed.  "Please don't let him hurt himself anymore!"

"Hurt himself... why would he want to hurt himself," Mother Mouse asked, looking confused.

"He's been pounding his head for a long time," Morty cried.   "Look!!!  Look at what he's doing to himself!!!!!!!"

Mother Mouse gently lowered her son down onto the floor, and stared up at the baby.

"Please do something," Morty wailed.  "Please.. do something to make him stop!"

Mother Mouse slowly climbed up into the crib and stood there silently staring at the baby.

"Oh my goodness," she shrieked, as she watched him pounding his head over and over again.

What's happening, Mother," Morty Mouse cried, as he ran up and stood beside her.  "Why is he doing this?????"

Mother Mouse stood there shaking her head in disbelief.

"Little One," she whispered.  "Little One.... Please don't do this to yourself."

"He's not going to stop," cried Morty.  "He just keeps doing it!!!!"

A sudden sadness filled her heart, as Mother Mouse watched the human baby flopping around in his crib..... banging his swollen head again and again.

"Oh..... Little One, what have they done to you," Mother Mouse said sadly."

"They didn't do this, Mother," Morty blurted out, looking confused.  "He's doing this to himself!!!!!   Please... please make him stop!!!!"

"No, Morty," Mother Mouse said as she sadly shook her head.  "THEY did this!!!  THEY are the ones that did this to him!!!"

"What have they done to you," she whispered as she sadly stared at the human baby. "Oh my....... what have they done?"

Mother Mouse sat down on the mattress and pulled her son up into her lap.  Slowly and gently she began rocking Morty back and forth in her arms... as she began to sing...

There comes a time when we need a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somehow will soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth - you know love is all we need

We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

Well, send'em you your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us
By turning stone to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand

We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

When you're down and out
There seems no hope at all
But if you just believe
There's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, let's realize
That one change can only come
When we stand together as one

We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
