Chapter Two
Bang! The slamming of the front door awakened Father Mouse. For just a few seconds, he had forgotten that he was still in the baby's bedroom. Daylight was just beginning to peak through the gaps of the torn window blinds, and it cast quite a shadow across the cluttered room. Father Mouse stared down at the little baby that lie quietly sleeping beneath him, then frowned at the site of the dried tears that stained his sweet little face. "You're mother has come home little one," he whispered. "She will be here soon to take care of you."
Father Mouse never did tell Mother Mouse about that night that he spent in the baby's bedroom. In fact, neither he nor Morty Mouse ever told Mother Mouse about ANY of the nights that Father Mouse ventured out to check on the human baby. It wasn't as if Mother Mouse was a cold and uncaring mouse, she just preferred to keep to herself. And she very strongly believed that all mothers should care for their own. Yet, Father Mouse didn't quite see things the same way that Mother Mouse did. Although he really hated keeping this secret from Mother Mouse, he knew that she just wouldn't understand. You see, Father Mouse had a soft spot in his heart for babies. Not just his own baby... but ALL babies... and no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn't bring himself to stand by and do nothing when a baby was crying out for help.
As the months passed by, Father Mouse began to grow very attached to the baby. He found himself going out for more and more walks, just so he could check to be sure that the baby was still okay. Very early one morning as Father Mouse was preparing to go out for a walk, Morty Mouse approached him.
"Father... may I walk with you today?" he asked very hesitantly.
"No Morty... you need to stay here with your mother," he said. "It's very dangerous out there in the human world."
"But Father.... I really want to go with you," Morty whined. "Pleeeeeease!"
Mother Mouse had been standing nearby listening to the entire conversation. "Father... why don't you take the boy with you today," she said. "He is growing up... you know. He's not a baby anymore."
Morty Mouse leaned over towards his father and whispered to him. "I want to go see the baby too, Father. Please take me with you!"
Father Mouse paused for a few seconds, then exchanged a quick look with Mother Mouse.
"Well... if you think you're going with me young man... you better go get yourself ready really fast," he said smiling down at his son.
"Yeahhhhh!!!!! Thank you Father!"
Morty Mouse was so excited that he was almost bouncing, as he and his father headed out the door and into the kitchen. But... just as he was about to bounce right past his father, his father reached out and grabbed him firmly by his tail. "Not so fast Morty!" he said in a stern voice. "There are a few things that you need to know to help keep yourself safe on this walk." Morty Mouse turned, and listened closely as his father explained about the dangers that awaited him out there in the human world. And he slowly nodded as Father Mouse told him how very important it was for him to stay right beside him, and to always be ready to run very fast if they ever found themselves in a dangerous situation.
Morty Mouse's eyes grew wide with amazement as he and Father Mouse made their way across the kitchen floor. He had never seen so much food before in his entire life. As they walked along, Morty reached down and scooped up tiny bits of crackers and cereal and began stuffing them into his mouth.
"Slow down, Morty," said Father Mouse laughing. "You're going to eat yourself sick if you're not careful."
As they were passing underneath the kitchen table, something came flying through the air and hit Morty Mouse right on the top of his head. "Ouch!... what was that," Morty yelled as he rubbed the top of his head. "Somebody just threw something at me!"
Father Mouse leaned down and took a really close look at his son's head. "I don't see anything," he said. But... just as Father Mouse started to stand up, something flew across the room and hit him right in the shoulder.
Father Mouse grabbed Morty Mouse and dragged him behind the leg of the kitchen table. He stood there for a moment to catch his breath, then decided to go investigate. "Wait here," he said to his son. "And don't you move... not even one inch! Do you understand me?"
"I understand Father," said Morty. "Just be careful."
"Don't worry... I will," his father said, as he slowly inched his way around the leg of the table.
Morty Mouse watched, as his father slowly crept across the room. He was so scared, and had just begun to wish that he had stayed behind with Mother Mouse, when he heard his father start to laugh. Morty looked over at Father Mouse, who was laughing so hard that his little belly had begun shaking back and forth.
"Come here Morty," he said, still laughing hysterically.
Morty Mouse came out from his hiding place and walked over beside Father Mouse. "What is it, Father... what's so funny?"
Father Mouse pointed one finger high up into the air. "Look... Morty! Look right up there," he said.
Morty tipped his head up high and strained to look in the direction that his father was pointing. Just as he looked up, something came flying right past his head. "Hey!"
Father Mouse began laughing again. "Don't be afraid, Morty, it's just food. It won't hurt you son."
Morty looked puzzled. "Food? Why is someone throwing food at us, Father," he asked quite confused. Before his father could answer, Morty looked back up and screamed.
"WHAT IS THAT," he said backing away slowly.
"Don't be afraid, Morty! He won't hurt you! I promise," his Father said calmly.
"What is that Father," Morty said, as he snuck around to the side of the table to get a little closer look.
"That, my son... is THE BABY," Father Mouse said smiling. "He won't hurt you, Morty."
"Thhhhhat's the baby? But... he's so big Father," said Morty Mouse quite confused.
"Well... human's are pretty big Morty. Go.... go take a little closer look at him, said his father.
Morty Mouse walked up to the high chair and peered up at the baby. "Well... I don't understand." Morty looked back and forth between the baby and his father. " I thought you said that he was a sweet baby, Father? If he's so sweet... why was he throwing things at us?"
"That's what baby's do when they eat Morty. They throw their food all over the floor." Then father winked at Morty. "You used to throw your food too Morty... when you were a baby. But your food was smaller... and it didn't hurt when it hit us."
Morty smiled at his father, and stood there staring at the human baby. "Wow! He really is big!"
"Yes... he is," said his father. And he's very cute too," he said smiling proudly.
Morty began looking around the room. "Where's his Mother? Why is he here all alone, Father?"
Father Mouse shrugged. "I don't know, Morty. His mother doesn't spend very much time with him. That's why I like to come out and check on him from time to time."
CRASH! The back door flew open with such force that it bounced right off the wall behind it... then slammed shut again. Father Mouse was so startled that he fell backwards onto the floor. The floor shook as the heavy footsteps approached them. Father Mouse quickly reached out and grabbed Morty Mouse by the leg and dragged him towards the corner of the room to hide.
"JUST LOOK AT THIS MESS!" The man's voice echoed through the entire kitchen. "DAMNED BRAT... LOOK AT THE MESS YOU'VE MADE! WHERE'S YOUR MOTHER?"
The baby started screaming so loudly that Morty Mouse covered his ears to block out the noise. The man was stumbling across the kitchen floor towards the baby. He reached out his hand and slapped the baby across the side of his face. "SHUT UP YOU DAMNED BRAT! SHUT UP!" The baby screamed louder than ever now, and the hand pulled back and slapped him again and again.
Morty Mouse was so frightened that he started shaking. "DO SOMETHING FATHER! HE'S HURTING THE BABY!
Father Mouse hugged Morty Mouse as tightly as he could. "I can't do anything Morty. He's so much bigger than I am. There's nothing I can do to make him stop. I'm so sorry!"
"BUT HE'S HURTING HIM! YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING," Morty Mouse screamed.
"I'm so sorry Morty... I can't stop this!"
Morty Mouse looked up at his father, and the tears began rolling down his face. "Father, I don't understand"... he said as his voice began breaking. "WHO IS THAT MAN?"
Morty Mouse had never seen his father cry before. Yet, there he stood, crying so hard that he had to struggle just to get the words out of his mouth. "That's... thats... that's hhhhis... Father."
