I'm on the Roof
By Suzanne
When mom and dad start pissing me off
And no one seems to care that I'm alive...
I'll climb right up to the top of the roof
To tease, and threaten to take a big nose dive...
Everyone will come and look at me...
As I put on a striking show for free...
So, when mom and dad don't come out and scream
I'll sit and think up one more devilish scheme...
I'll climb right out to the edge of the roof
and take this fun game right to the extreme...
I'm on the roof, won't someone rescue me?????????????
Look out the window, neighbors can't you see...
My old sad and helpless plea????????????
The neighbors, they all looked up and stared
Their faces, they were really filled with FEAR...
I finally got someone to listen to me...
My troubled heart was suddenly filled with glee...
I started to yell and scream for more help
And everyone came to see my BIG display...
'Til mom reached up and grabbed my right leg
And then I really started to scream and beg...
Leave me alone... I'm on the roof...
Leave me alone... I'm on the roof
Man... what some kids will do to get a little attention. : (
The good news is... TLP didn't jump off the roof.
The bad news is... things really started to escalate after that incident
The good news is... I'm laughing today and writing silly songs instead of crying. : )
The bad news is... we are raising TLP's Prozac level back up from 20 to 60 mg
and we had to temporarily put him put him on Abilify to calm things down for awhile : (
The good news is... I'm very aware that we are still going to have some of these crazy up and down days
The bad news is... I'm getting too old for this shit.
The good news is... I have soooooooooo many good friends that understand.
Tomorrow, when TLP goes back to school...
I think I'm going to go up and sit on the roof and have a party...
and maybe even sing this song to the neighbors.

This song peaked at # 5 in 1963.

by James Taylor as a slower-paced Top 30 pop version in1979.

and by Neil Diamond in 1993 [Neil Diamond Up on the Roof CD].
When this old world starts getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space
On the roof, it's peaceful as can be
And there the world below can't bother me
Let me tell you now
When I come home feelin' tired and beat
I go up where the air is fresh and sweet (up on the roof)
I get away from the hustling crowd
And all that rat-race noise down in the street (up on the roof)
On the roof, the only place I know
Where you just have to wish to make it so
Let's go up on the roof (up on the roof)
At night the stars put on a show for free
And, darling, you can share it all with me
I keep a-tellin' you
Right smack dab in the middle of town
I've found a paradise that's trouble proof (up on the roof)
And if this world starts getting you down
There's room enough for two
Up on the roof (up on the roof)
Up on the roo-oo-oof (up on the roof)
Oh, come on, baby (up on the roof)
Oh, come on, honey (up on the roof)
FADE
Everything is all right (up on the roof)
A Note From Suzanne...
I've always loved this song written by Goffin and King. After we got TLP down off the roof... and after the initial panic feeling left my body... this song kept runnning through my mind over and over again. I was just goofing around and trying to lighten my mood a bit when I started writing the words to "I'm on the Roof." I decided to post it here at "The Little Prince", hoping to lighten the mood of other parents that have ever panicked as they've watched their small child walking on the roof. If anyone has a problem with me rewriting these words (just for fun)... please let me know and I will kindy remove this page from "The Little Prince" website.
Response from our TLP RAD Parents
Can I set on the roof with you? I will bring a bottle of wine for each of us. We can whine the night away.
I read your "Roof" poem. What a coincidence. My son did that same thing when he was about TLP's age.
That's when he had his first visit to the psych hospital too!
When he would not get what he wanted or was mad, he would go out on the roof. He wouldn't yell or scream,
but he would run around and stomp on the roof. I thought he would come crashing through.
Sounds like you are not lacking for excitement at your house.
Just when we think they have pulled EVERY trick in the book they think up another.
I wonder what the Little Prince would say if Suz read her rooftop poem to him. hehehehe
That was really cute, Suz.
